The Dalai Lama turned 90 after the ceremony in the Northern Indian city of Dharamshala on Sunday, where the spiritual leaders of Tibet have been staying in exile for decades.
Thousands of Tibetan Buddhists along with famous celebrities and officials of the United States and India have gathered in beautiful Himalayan city to honor the Dalai Lama with an opportunity for a politically debate.
What did the Dalai Lama say before her birthday?
The Dalai Lama shared Himal as “just an ordinary Buddhist monk” in his birthday message.
“I will continue to focus on my commitments to promote human values, religious harmony, attract focus on Indian knowledge, which explains the functioning of mind and feelings and the functioning of Tibetan culture and heritage, which has so much ability to contribute to the world through emphasizing peace and compassion of mind,” he said.
Earlier this week, the head of the Tibetan Buddhism said he plans to rebirth after death.
The Dalai Lama said that he would have a successor, which can be of any gender, and not necessarily Tibetan nationality.
This announcement rested the years of speculation that he could be the last person to play a role in the sacred tradition extending for 600 years.
The Dalai Lama said on the eve of her birthday, “I hope to survive for 30-40 years.”
The Dalai Lama has been set to give a speech later on Sunday in which he is expected to talk about his succession.
On Sunday, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi called the Dalai Lama “a permanent symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline”.
Modi wrote on X, “His message has inspired respect and praise for all religions. We pray for his constant good health and long life.”
