Highlights
- Trump canceled the funding of bullet train project
- California high-speed train’s future in doubt
- The state is now looking towards private investors
Till now, a quarter of the total funding for this bullet train came from the Federal Government, the rest of the money was raised by the state of California with its ‘cap-end-trade program’ and the bonds passed by voters. Donald Trump had targeted this project as ‘Train to Novhare’. He wrote on Truth Social, ‘The promise with which this rail started was never fulfilled and will never happen. This project was overpressed, overreguated and delivery failed.
Now what next?
Now the focus of the state is on completing 192 km between Bakersfield in Central Valley, which is expected to be operational by 2033. But critics say that even making this part is not possible at the moment. CEO Ian Chaudhary of the California High-speed Railway Authority termed the Trump administration’s decision wrong and ‘illegal’ and said ‘these are legally binding agreements. We have fulfilled every condition, and the Federal Review has recently recognized it in February 2025.
Now California is looking towards private investors to complete the railway project. The total expenditure of the project is being judged by more than $ 100 billion. The government has requested private investors to express interest by the end of the month.
Political rhetoric also intensified
Governor Gavin Nosam said that Trump wants to hand over the future to China and leave the Central Valley of America. He said, ‘We will not let this happen.’ At the same time, acting administrator of Federal Railway Administration, Drew Filli described the project as ‘broken story of promises’ and ‘misuse of taxpayers’.
