Washington: The US has announced new sanctions on its flights, accusing Mexico of violation of bilateral aviation agreement. The US Transport Department said that Mexico is not following the US-Mexico Air Transport Agreement (2015) since 2022. According to the department, the Mexico government suddenly canceled the slots and forced American cargo aircraft to be removed from the capital’s main airport Benito Juarez International Airport to the new airport. The then President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, described it as necessary in view of the preparations for the crowd and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

US Transport Secretary Sean P. Dafi announced three ‘America First’ measures. Under this, it was said that all Mexican Airlines will have to file their flights in the US with the Transport Department. Any major passenger or cargo charter aircraft will have to take permission of the department before traveling from America. Also, antitrust discounts can be withdrawn from the partnership of Delta Airlines and Aromaxico. Delta and Aromaxico partnered in 2016 and they are opposing the decision.

Companies plead

Companies have argued that they should not be punished for the government’s action, as it affects two dozen routes and will affect consumer savings of about $ 800 million. The department has warned that if Mexico does not take corrective steps, its flights may be denied. It is noteworthy that Mexico has been the top international destination of American tourists over the years. More than 4.5 crore foreign tourists arrived there in 2024.
