Al Salvador approves uncertain President Reunion – DW – 08/01/2025

The parliamentary of Al Salvador on Thursday approved the change in the Constitution, under which the presidential post has been extended to six years and the President’s boundary has been removed.

The thesis amendment in the Constitution wants to allow the supporting President Naib Bowkele – who enjoy the support of the majority in Parliament – to run indefinitely.

Constitutional changes were reviewed quickly in the Legislative Assembly. It was passed by 57 supporters of the bouquet, and only three opposition members voted against it.

Changes were proposed by legalist Ana Figuero from the party of new ideas. The new rules are therefore ending the second round of election, where the top two candidates face each other in the first round.

More power for ‘quiet dictator’

Constitutional reforms will not only allow the presidential expansion and the removal of the two-day election system, but also seek the permission of the election “without reservation”.

Bukele, who has described Himlfe as a “cool dictator”, has held his position as President since 2019. He was re -elected in 2024 with a broad majority, when the Supreme Court allowed him to bypass the constitutional ban on a consecutive tenure.

Again the election helped the buckets to strengthen their control over state institutions and Parliament.

“Thanks to making history, fellow duty,” Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Ernesto Castro, that is, a member of new ideas after counting votes.

How did the opposition react?

Meanwhile, the opposition questioned the time of proposals and slammed when the reforms were passed.

“On this day, democracy has died in Al Salvador … the mask was removed,” during the parliamentary session, opposition legalist Marcela Villatoro said, criticizing the proposal that the country is distracted by the summer vacation period.
