Italy approves the controversial bridge to tie Sicily to the mainland – DW – 08/06/2025

A committee of the Italian Minister on Wednesday plans to build a Green Lit’s plan 3.3 km (2.05-mile) -Long Bridge, which connects Sicily Island to Italy, the mainland of the Mesina of Messina, Italy.

The controversial project has been discussed for decades, but the latest plans call for the completion of the bridge by 2032.

If complete, the Strait of Mesina Bridge will break the record of Cannakale Bridge in Türkiye.

The coalition government of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni introduced the state-funded project as an economic boost for the deteriorating South of Italy.

“This is not an easy task, but we consider it an investment in the current and future of Italy, and when they are understood we like tough challenges,” Meloni said according to his office.

Transport Minister Mateo Salvini told a news conference in Rome that the bridge wants to be the “largest infrastructure project in the west”.

Why is the bridge controversial?

Critics have questioned the knowledge of the construction of a record-live suspension bridge in a earthquake area, while pointing to its cost, possible environmental damage may be the reason for this and fear that mafia may infiltrate the construction contracts.

Earlier this week, environmental associations filed a complaint with the European Union at serious risks from the construction of the bridge to the local environment.

Nicola Fratonini, leaving Greens’ MP and Alliance, slammed a “mega-project, which would twist a large amount of public resources” and “Risk will turn into a huge black hole,”

The Center-Leam Democratic Party warned that the project “prevents environment, security and European criteria and general knowledge.”

Many people believe that the mega project, which has been discussed since the 1960s, will never be physical. But the minister has called for approval on Wednesday by the government committee, which has been received by the project anytime.

What do we know about the project?

The project of € 13.5 billion ($ 15.6 billion) has delayed fulfilling various obstacles and concerns.

The bridge is designed to spread a narrow strip of water between the area of Celibria, with two railway lines and three lane traffic from the Ether.

Supporters hope that it will significantly reduce the travel time from Sicily, which is currently delayed by a hawker ride that includes long waiting.

Work on the project could begin in September or early October, Salvini told reporters. He welcomed the project with a bundle of other new roads, railways and stations as “development accelerator” for Sicily and Celibria.

He also indicated that the project could help achieve military objectives.

“It is clear that this is dual utility and can also be used for security reasons,” Heer said in a press conference.
