Palm Beach. US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he will cut US funds to Colombia because its President Gustavo Petro is doing nothing to stop drug production. In a social media post, Trump described Petro as a “drug dealer” and warned that he should “shut down his drug business.”
The US President made this post while staying at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. It is the latest sign of confrontation between the US and one of its closest allies in Latin America. According to the United Nations, Colombia is the largest exporter of cocaine in the world. Cultivation of coca leaves, a vital ingredient, in the country reached an all-time high last year.
Recently, the US State Department had said that it would cancel Petro’s visa because when he came to New York for the UN General Assembly event, he took part in a protest and called on US troops not to follow Trump’s orders. Petro said, “I request all the soldiers of the US Army not to point their rifles against humanity and disobey Trump’s orders.”
