But if they keep doing it, they will have to pay heavy tariffs.

India has already rejected Trump’s claims. When journalists asked whether India had denied any such talks, Trump replied, ‘If they say so, then they will have to continue giving tariffs, and they do not want that.’ The Trump administration says the proceeds from Russia’s oil sales are funding the Ukraine war. Trump said that India takes about one-third of its total oil supply from Russia, which helps Russia fund the Ukraine war. He said, ‘We are concerned that Russia’s oil income is helping Putin continue the war.’

Tariff already imposed on India

America has been increasing pressure on countries doing business with Russia in recent months. The Trump administration says that countries buying oil from Russia are indirectly funding the Ukraine war. Buying cheap oil from Russia still remains a major hurdle in India-US trade talks. Trump has imposed 50 percent tariff on India. He says that half of this 50% tariff has been imposed due to oil purchases from Russia.
