Trump administration imposes heavy sanctions on major Russian oil companies

The Trump administration on Wednesday announced further sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil.

The Treasury Department said in a statement that it was announcing the sanctions because of “Russia’s lack of serious commitment to the peace process to end the war in Ukraine.”

The statement said blacklisting the companies would hamper Russia’s ability to raise revenue for its war machine, adding that the US was prepared “to take further action if necessary” to end the war.

Treasury Secretary Scott Besant told reporters before the official announcement that it would be “one of the largest sanctions we have ever imposed against the Russian Federation.”

The US announced the sanctions a day after a potential meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary failed.
