Number of Indians going to America illegally increases, Trudeau’s country becomes the preferred route, with more than 42,000 entering from Canada

The fiscal year for USCBP data runs from October to September. Its data shows a rise in the number of Indian Americans crossing into the United States illegally through the Canadian border. In 2022, 109,535 people were arrested trying to make an illegal crossing. The number of Indians in this was 16 percent. This number increased in 2023 and 30,010 Indians out of 189,402 people were arrested. This year the numbers increased again. 42,764 Indians who entered America illegally from Canada were arrested.

According to a BBC report, migration analysts Jill Guerra and Sneha Puri of the Washington-based Niskanen Center think tank said that these numbers are lower than the numbers of immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean. But over the past four years, Indians have become the largest group of migrants arriving at the U.S. border outside the Western Hemisphere. But the big question is that until now most people enter America from the Mexican border, why has Canada become the first choice.

Why Canada?

According to the Niskanen Centre, the reason for the increase in illegal entry from Canada is the ease of access to the Canada visa process. Canada became a more accessible entry point for Indians. This is because obtaining a Canadian visa takes an average of 76 days. The American visa takes more than a year. In addition, the border between the United States and Canada is longer and less protected than the border between Mexico and the United States. In Trump’s next term, strictness can also be seen on the border between the United States and Canada.
