The announcement of the new Ledger Wallet occurs alongside the presentation of the Trezor Safe 7, unveiled by this company on October 21. Based in Czech Republic, Trezor did incorporate significant technological innovations in the new product of the series, such such as the Tropic01 secure element chip, auditable because it is open source, and a Boardloader unalterable that verifies updates with post-quantum cryptography algorithms, to protect wallet funds in the future.

The chip incorporated by Ledger is a secure element with EAL6+ certification. As CriptoNoticias has reported in the past, this chip is subject to NDA (Confidentiality Agreement), so its design is not completely auditable. And if it has been audited by third parties in the past, the NDA would not allow a public disclosure of the vulnerabilities found in the device.

This marks an important contrast in terms of security (although it is also a riskier and more experimental bet) in favor of the Trezor Safe 7 from the Czech company.

According to the company that manufactured the new model, there are compelling reasons to choose a closed source chip over an open one.

«Open source software reduces users’ need for trust; however, it is not completely foolproof. Open source software on unsecured chips will continue to be highly vulnerable to side-channel and bug attacks. Given the choice of using the Secure Element and being almost completely open source versus using an unsecured chip and being completely open source, Ledger opts for the more secure approach,” says Ledger.
