Lawyers for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday filed an appeal against his 27-year prison sentence for his role in a failed coup that precipitated his defeat in the 2022 elections.
There is no time limit for Supreme Court judges to examine appeals.
Why was Bolsonaro jailed and why did his conspiracy not work?
The plot envisaged the assassination of Lula, his vice president Geraldo Alcmin and Alexandre de Moraes, one of the five Supreme Court justices who decide Bolsonaro’s fate.
Prosecutors said the plan failed only because of the lack of military support.
Why was Bolsonaro placed under house arrest and not sent to jail?
The former president, who led Brazil from 2019 to 2023, has been under house arrest since August.
Under Brazilian law, he will not be sent to prison until all legal avenues have been exhausted.
