Two men have been arrested after several people were stabbed on a train in eastern England, police in the United Kingdom said Saturday night.
“We are currently responding to an incident on a train bound for Huntingdon, where a number of people have been stabbed,” British Transport Police said on Twitter.
Cambridgeshire Police said in a separate post on X that two people had been arrested.
Cambridgeshire Constabulary said in a statement that officers had received calls just before 8pm, “with reports that a number of people had been stabbed on a train.”
“Armed officers attended and the train was stopped at Huntingdon… A number of people have been taken to hospital,” police said.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer says train crash ‘appalling’ and ‘deeply worrying’
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a post on Twitter that the incident was “deeply worrying” and that his thoughts were with those affected. He also thanked the emergency services for their response.
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she was “deeply saddened to hear about the stabbing incident” and that her “thoughts are with all those affected.”
“The two suspects were immediately arrested and taken into custody,” he said in a post on X. He asked people to avoid speculation in the initial phase.
Critical care teams respond ‘on a large scale’ to the situation
The East of England Ambulance Service, responsible for the immediate medical response to people in the area, said in a post to X that they “mobilized a large-scale response at Huntingdon railway station involving multiple ambulances, tactical commanders, our hazardous area response team.”
Critical care teams including the East Anglian Air Ambulance and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were also at the scene.
“We can confirm that we have transported several patients to hospital.”
