Two people have been arrested after a stabbing incident on a passenger train in Cambridgeshire, England, police in the United Kingdom said Saturday night.
“Armed police from Cambridgeshire Police boarded the train and arrested two men in connection with the incident, who have been taken into police custody,” police said. a statement,
British Transport Police said 10 people were taken to hospital, with nine believed to have “life-threatening” injuries.
One person is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries and there have been no deaths, the statement said.
What else do we know about the train stabbing and the police response?
Police have declared it a major incident, and said Counter Terrorism Policing are supporting the investigation to establish the full circumstances and motivation of the suspected attack.
Chief Superintendent Chris Casey of the British Transport Police said it was a “shocking incident” and that his thoughts were with the injured and their families.
“We are carrying out an urgent investigation to establish what has happened and it may take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything. It would not be appropriate to speculate on the cause of the incident at this early stage,” he said.
The East of England Ambulance Service said they had “mobilized a large-scale response at Huntingdon railway station including multiple ambulances, tactical commanders, our hazardous area response team.”
Critical care teams including the East Anglian Air Ambulance and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were also at the scene.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer says train crash ‘appalling’ and ‘deeply worrying’
In a post on Twitter, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the incident was “deeply worrying” and that his thoughts were with those affected. He also thanked the emergency services for their response.
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she was “deeply saddened to hear about the stabbing incident” and that her “thoughts are with all those affected.”
He urged people to refrain from commenting or speculating “at this early stage” of the investigation.
Authorities have not released information about the suspects’ identities or possible motives.
‘Major disruption’ on busy railway route
British Transport Police said the train was due to travel from Doncaster to King’s Cross, London at 6.25pm.
The train operating company that runs the majority of passenger train services on the East Coast Main Line, London North Eastern Railway (LNER), said in a post on Twitter that they were “experiencing major disruption” on the LNER route.
“Our advice is ‘do not travel’. Please postpone your travel where possible,” LNER said.
The East Coast Main Line is one of the UK’s busiest routes, with trains connecting London with major cities such as York, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
