Israel accuses Iran of plot to assassinate ambassador to Mexico – DW – 11/07/2025

The United States and Israel on Friday accused Iran of plotting the assassination of Israel’s Ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz-Negar.

Israel said Mexican authorities intervened to foil the alleged plot.

“We thank the security and law enforcement services in Mexico for thwarting a terrorist network directed by Iran that was trying to attack the Israeli ambassador to Mexico,” an Israeli Foreign Ministry statement said.

US says threat lies

News agencies including AFP and Reuters quoted an unnamed US official as saying that the plot was launched in late 2024 by the Quds Force, an elite unit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC).

The US official said that the conspiracy has been controlled and there is no longer any threat.

Iran and Israel are arch regional rivals and have waged a proxy conflict for decades.

A 12-day conflict between the two countries earlier this year ended with a ceasefire on June 25.

Iran has traditionally supported Palestinian militant groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad, as well as Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the Houthi rebel group in Yemen, all of which are engaged in conflicts with Israel.

Western countries accuse Iran of plotting attacks, espionage

The US and its allies have often accused Iran and its proxies of plotting attacks and espionage operations in Western countries.

In July, a Danish citizen was arrested by German authorities on charges of spying on behalf of Tehran.

Australia’s ASIO security agency said it had found that Iran had coordinated several anti-Semitic attacks in the country, leading Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to expel Iran’s ambassador in August.
