Zelensky is going to Türkiye to meet Erdogan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is visiting Türkiye on Wednesday, which he announced a day before his visit to Spain.

The visit, where he is scheduled to meet Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is an effort to revive talks with Moscow to end the war.

Zelensky said of the visit, “We are preparing to reinvigorate the dialogue, and we have developed solutions that we will propose to our partners. Making every possible effort to bring the war to a close is Ukraine’s top priority.”

He said the purpose of the meeting with Erdogan was to bring a “just peace” to Ukraine.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff will also be in Ankara on Wednesday to attend the planned talks, multiple media outlets reported, citing unnamed sources. But the same outlets later issued statements to the contrary from other unnamed sources.

Burhanettin Duran, head of Turkey’s presidential communications directorate, said in a post on Twitter that Erdogan plans to discuss efforts to achieve a ceasefire and a permanent solution to the war in Ukraine.

Ankara has in the past suggested playing a role in mediating any solution. Previous talks between Kiev and Moscow have yielded agreements on freeing prisoners of war, but any resolution to the ongoing conflict has so far remained elusive.

Meanwhile, Kiev announced it would once again use US-supplied ATACMS missiles in attacks on targets inside Russia, a move the Kremlin has long warned against.

And in Poland, two airports in the southeast were temporarily closed amid Russian attacks on neighboring Ukraine.
