Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer wants to include farms and food producers in future emergency and disaster exercises organized by the German military.

The politician said it was “absolutely right” for the Bundeswehr to train for a possible attack on the Berlin metro. However, he added: “We must not forget one thing: if primary production, agriculture no longer works, if we do not have enough animal feed, if water is no longer available for animals, we will have huge problems,” the minister warned.
“Our food supply will collapse.” For this reason, agriculture “definitely” needs to be part of security practice.
Renner also called for expanding the federal government’s emergency food stockpile to include prepared canned food.
There is good stock at around 150 storage sites and enough for 30 days, he said.
However, these mainly consist of products like cereals, peas, pulses and canned milk, which cannot be consumed immediately. Therefore, he said, the stockpile should also include canned ready-to-eat food.
