Trump says Ukraine was discussed in ‘very strong terms’ with European leaders

US President Donald Trump said “we discussed Ukraine in very strong terms” when asked about his earlier phone call with the leaders of Britain, France and Germany at the White House on Wednesday night.

“They want us to go to a meeting in Europe over the weekend and we’ll make a decision based on what they come back with,” Trump said.

Asked if the Ukrainian president was expected to attend the gathering, Trump replied: “Zelensky and us.”

The UK, France and Germany, along with Ukraine and other partners, have been working rapidly over the past few weeks to come up with a revised proposal that balances the US proposal for peace in Ukraine.

The so-called E3 leaders aim to secure security guarantees for Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached.

What to know about tensions between Washington and Europe

This development has happened at a time when relations between America and Europe have come under strain over the new American national security strategy.

Trump called European leaders “weak” in an interview with Politico this week.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the American newspaper “unacceptable.”

‘Coalition of the willing’ to discuss Ukraine’s post-war security in virtual call

The “coalition of the willing” group of nations is ready to discuss “future security and preventing a recurrence of Russian aggression,” Volodymyr Zelensky posted on Twitter.

“May this week bring news for us all – and an end to the bloodshed,” Zelensky said in his post. He will also attend the meeting held virtually.

“Coalition of the Willing” is an umbrella term for the approximately 30 countries that support Ukraine. This group is led by Britain and France.

Zelensky is on a mission to balance the US peace plan, which is widely seen as favoring Russian demands to end the war.

Zelensky attended a personal meeting with British, French and German leaders in London earlier this week to hammer out a deal on guaranteeing Ukraine’s post-war security.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to join an urgent virtual call with the self-titled “Coalition of the Willing” group of nations on Thursday.

The call comes after US President Donald Trump said he and European leaders on Wednesday discussed proposals to end the war in Ukraine in “very strong terms”.

Ukraine and European allies have pushed back at a US proposal to end the war in Ukraine, which was widely seen as supporting Moscow’s demands.

Zelensky then held a series of meetings with European leaders and Ukrainian allies to rework the proposal.

Zelensky previously said he hoped to send a redrafted proposal to U.S. negotiators by Wednesday, but it was unclear whether that had happened.
