US President Donald Trump on Monday unveiled plans for a new class of Navy ship named after him.
Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, the president claimed that the “Trump-class” Navy ships “will be the largest warships in the history of our country.”
The new initiative will begin with two “Trump-class” ships, expanding to 25 new watercraft, in what is being dubbed the “Golden Fleet.”
“The US Navy will be leading the design of these ships with me, because I’m a very aesthetic person,” Trump said at the event, attended by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The President vowed to “restore America as a major shipbuilding power.”
These ships are the latest attempt by the US President to make his mark on the US armed forces. Trump never served in the military.
Navy ships are often named after prominent political figures, such as the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier. At present there is no warship named after Trump.
