Ghana has arrested about 50 Nigerians in a campaign against online scammers, the government said on Wednesday.
The arrests were made during raids on the outskirts of the capital Accra.
The country’s Information Minister, Sam George, said on his Two women are also among those arrested.
While Nigeria’s fintech sector has made a name for itself in recent years, the country is also known for internet scammers, while itself becoming a target of such criminals.
Earlier this year, about 800 people were arrested in the capital Lagos, of whom about 150 were Chinese nationals.
What else do we know about the crackdown on online scammers?
The 48 suspects are accused of planning and carrying out “romance scams, online investment frauds, impersonation schemes and illegal online gold trading”, the minister said.
Accra recently imposed a ban on gold trading, including limits on purchases by foreigners, to combat the country’s informal mining.
Ghanaian youth are also turning to online scams, saying they have few other opportunities to make ends meet.
