An exciting contest can be seen between Congress candidate wrestler Vinesh Phogat and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Captain Yogesh Bairagi on Julana assembly seat of Jind district in Haryana. In Julana, BJP has bet on young leader and Captain Yogesh Bairagi, who left his job in Air India and entered politics, against Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat, who came into politics from sports.

Bairagi’s name was included in the second list of BJP candidates for the Haryana elections released on Tuesday. 35-year-old Yogesh, a resident of Safidon, is currently the vice-president of the Haryana unit of the BJP Yuva Morcha.

Julana is a Jat majority seat

He thanked the party leadership for making him the candidate from Julana seat and said that he would work hard to ensure the victory of the party in the upcoming elections.

The Julana assembly seat came into limelight when the Congress fielded Olympian wrestler Phogat from this Jat dominated constituency.

Vinesh’s in-laws are from Julana

Although Phogat is from Balali in Charkhi Dadri district, her in-laws are in Julana. Bakhta Kheda village in Julana is the ancestral village of her husband Somveer Rathi.

Phogat, 30, had retired from wrestling before entering politics.

Vinesh was ahead in the performance of wrestlers

Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who were at the forefront of the wrestlers’ agitation against then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, had recently joined the Congress.

Punia is a bronze medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, while Phogat is the first female wrestler to reach an Olympic final. However, she was disqualified after being found to be around 100 grams overweight in the 50kg weight category. She later announced her retirement from the sport.

Voting for the 90-member state assembly will be held on October 5 and counting of votes will take place on October 8.
