French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday criticized Donald Trump’s derisive comments about his marriage, saying they do not deserve a response.
In a video briefly posted on YouTube by the White House and later removed, Trump mocked the French president while he criticized NATO allies for not joining US operations in Iran.
What did Trump say about Macron?
“We didn’t need them, but I asked anyway,” Trump said.
“I call France, Macron – whose wife treats him very badly. Still healing on the right side of the jaw,” Trump said in reference to a video from last year.
“And I said, ‘Emmanuel, we would love to help some in the Gulf, even though we are setting records for shooting down bad guys and shooting down ballistic missiles. We would love to help some. If you can, would you please send a ship immediately,'” Trump added.
“No, no, we can’t do that, Donald. We can do that after we win the war,” Trump said, mimicking a French accent to give an impression of Macron.
Macron rejects ‘show’
The French president responded to Trump’s comments, saying they were “neither elegant nor up to standard.”
“That’s why I’m not going to answer them – they don’t deserve an answer,” Macron told reporters.
The French president said that instead, the focus should be on “working towards reducing tensions” and a ceasefire in the Middle East.
“There is too much talk and it is everywhere,” the French president said, referring to Trump’s war policy.
“We all need a return to stability, peace, calm – this is no pretense!” Macron said.
