Election fever is gaining momentum in India, with four states and one union territory gearing up for elections in the coming weeks.

Assam is in first place, with the northeastern state going to polls on Thursday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address several election rallies in the key state on Monday, a day after opposition leader Rahul Gandhi appeared at a campaign event in the central district of Biswanath.

According to news agency PTI, Modi will first attend a rally in Bhabanipur-Sorbhog in Barpeta district of lower Assam.

He will then attend a rally in Hojai in central Assam before going to Dibrugarh in Upper Assam.

This is the second time this month that Modi is on the campaign trail in Assam to garner support for candidates of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which currently rules the state.

Rahul Gandhi condemned the Chief Minister of Assam

On Sunday, Gandhi attacked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Biswanath, calling him the “most corrupt and hate-mongering chief minister” of the country.

Meanwhile, Modi was at a rally in poll-bound West Bengal on Sunday, where he criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress government, saying it would be held accountable for its “sins”.

“Fear will be driven out of Bengal in this election. BJP’s landslide victory will instill confidence. I assure you that after this election, their (TMC’s) sins will be fully accounted for. One by one,” Modi told the crowd.

Elections will be held in West Bengal from 23 to 29 April.

TVK’s Vijay cancels election rally in Chennai

In the south, in Tamil Nadu state which goes to the polls on April 23, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party chief Vijay called off his Monday campaign in Chennai due to lack of time, news agency ANI reported.

The actor-turned-politician was to hold rallies in Villivakkam and T Nagar constituencies of the state capital, ANI reported quoting party sources.

According to ANI report, permission was given for the rally, but the party alleged that the time allotted by the police for movement between the two places was not enough.

According to ANI, TVK is planning to file a complaint with the Election Commission on this issue.
