The south Indian state of Tamil Nadu recorded a historic voter turnout of over 84% as voting concluded in all 234 assembly constituencies. Voting was largely peaceful across the state.

This is the highest ever turnout in an assembly election in the state since 1952.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) said the increase in Tamil Nadu’s voting percentage was due to changes in the total voters after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.

In the first phase of voting, voting took place in 152 out of 294 assembly constituencies.

Over 9 million voters were removed from the voter rolls during the SIR.

Of these, the highest number of voters were removed in Murshidabad district, which recorded a record turnout of 93.55% in the first round of voting in the state.
