The researcher known as L0la L33tz filed a public complaint against the event, accusing organizers of allowing figures such as acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Chief Kash Patel to use the platform to “whiten” their reputations before the digital asset community.
Indeed, both Blanche and Patel will be part of a panel titled “The Code is Freedom of Expression: Ending the War on Bitcoin.” Paul Grewal, who is the legal director of Coinbase, the largest bitcoin and cryptocurrency exchange in the US, will also participate.
According to L33tz, the outrage arises primarily from the legal stance that Blanche’s office has maintained against the development of privacy software. L33tz manifested that the Bitcoin Conference is now “officially laundering the reputations of US law enforcement”highlighting that not only has the current administration prosecuted more developers than any other in history, but they are actively taking action against the creators of anonymity tools.
The biggest sticking point lies in the case against Roman Storm, who is the co-founder of transaction mixer Tornado Cash. The researcher emphasized that the prosecutor’s office of the Southern District of New York, led by Blanche, maintains that Computer code is not a form of freedom of expression. Citing the prosecution’s arguments, L33tz noted that the premise of Storm’s argument — that he is being prosecuted for expressive conduct — is, according to the government, simply wrong.
The State’s official position is that the prosecution and evidence at trial relate to the function of the computer code that Tornado Cash operated and not to a communicative act. Given this, the researcher concluded that, under Blanche’s logic, the code is not freedom of expression for the simple fact that it has an operational function.
“It is an absolute disgrace that this man is allowed to go on stage and lie through his teeth while his subordinates are putting people in prison for writing software,” he said. “Boycott this shit immediately, and tell Todd Blanche to free our developers,” he exclaimed.
