NOLA Ready advised people to stay away from that area. New Orleans police said Wednesday they were responding to a major incident in the Bourbon Street area. It is said that a car hit a group of people, causing many people to be injured and some to die.
The city of New Orleans confirmed these numbers in a statement on its website, saying: “People were injured when a car struck a crowd of people at Canal and Bourbon Streets.” The New Orleans Police Department said in a statement that a large number of casualties were reported at Bourbon and Iberville streets, and that a vehicle may have struck people, NBC affiliate WDSU reported.
Historic Bourbon Street in the French Quarter is a popular tourist area filled with bars and restaurants and is expected to be crowded throughout the night. Police said on Tuesday they expected the city to be crowded as locals and visitors celebrated the New Year.
The New Orleans Police Department said it will operate at 100 percent staffing and add 300 additional officers to help keep the peace.
