9 people died in school shooting

Nine people have been killed in a shooting by a student at a school in Türkiye’s southern Kahramanmaraş region, local governor Mukarram Unlur said on Wednesday.

The governor said the dead included eight students and one teacher. Interior Minister Mustafa Siftasi said 13 other people were injured, six of whom were in serious condition.

The attacker was also killed, with reports saying he took his own life.

What do we know so far about the Turkish shootings?

“A student came to school with guns in his backpack, which we believe belonged to his father. He broke into two classrooms and fired randomly, causing injuries and deaths,” Unluer told reporters.

Police and ambulance were dispatched to the scene following reports of massive gunfire. Local media named the incident site as Aysar Kalik Middle School in Onikisubat district.

Unluer said the attacker was in the eighth grade and was between 13 and 14 years old.

The boy reportedly arrived at the school with five firearms and seven magazines that belonged to his father, a retired police officer.

2 school shootings in as many days

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said an investigation had been launched.

Wednesday’s shooting came a day after 16 people were injured when a former student opened fire at a high school in nearby Sanliurfa province. After this the shooter killed himself.

The motive for Tuesday’s attack is still unclear, but Interior Minister Siftasi said it was an “individual” incident.

School shootings are unusual in Türkiye, let alone occurring one after another.
