Apple announced Monday that Tim Cook will step down in September after more than a decade as chief executive.
Cook will hand over leadership to company veteran John Ternes, currently Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, which will mark Apple’s first CEO change since the death of founder Steve Jobs.
“Having spent almost my entire career at Apple, I have been fortunate to work under Steve Jobs and have Tim Cook as my mentor,” Ternes said.
He added, “It’s a privilege to help shape products and experiences that have profoundly changed the way we interact with the world and each other.”
Cook will become the executive chairman of Apple
Cook, who has led Apple since 2011, will remain executive chairman.
The move comes as Apple comes under increasing pressure to prove it can keep pace in artificial intelligence.
Cook said that leading Apple has been “the greatest privilege” of his life.
Separately, Johnny Sruzzi, who has overseen Apple’s custom chip and sensor design, has been named chief hardware officer.
