Tsunami warning has been issued after strong earthquake in Japan

A major earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday, prompting official tsunami warnings and evacuation orders. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said tidal waves up to three meters (10 feet) high could hit the country’s northern coasts almost immediately.

“Immediately evacuate coastal areas and riverbanks to a safe place such as higher ground or an evacuation building,” the agency said. The agency said there is a possibility of property damage.

“Do not leave the safe area until the warning is lifted,” the JMA said.

Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Aomori, the northernmost city on Japan’s largest island, Honshu, have been suspended for the time being.
