After five jars of contaminated baby food were found over the weekend in Slovakia, Austria and Czechia, German manufacturer HiPP has said the sabotage was part of an extortion attempt.

Austrian supermarket chain Spar issued an immediate recall after investigators determined that five jars of carrot and potato puree had been laced with rat poison.

Officials advised consumers to check that their baby food jars produce a distinctive “pop” sound when first opened to ensure they have not been tampered with.

Neither the HIPP nor the police disclosed what the alleged extortionist was demanding.

Six prosecuted over death of German tourists in Türkiye

The first hearing in the case of a Hamburg family killed in Türkiye last November is due to start in Istanbul today.

The Turkish-German Bocek family consisted of father Servet, mother Cigdem, their 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter.

He was on holiday in Istanbul when he fell seriously ill and later died in a local hospital.

Six people, including the hotel owner and a pest control company, are being sued for causing death by negligence after autopsies revealed that all four were poisoned by pesticide.

Prosecutors say it was the result of improperly performed pest extermination on the hotel’s first floor.

The defendants face sentences of up to 22.5 years in prison.
