German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that Iran’s leadership is in the process of “humiliating” the United States in the current conflict.
Merz said Washington appeared to lack a clear strategy and questioned what kind of exit the US might pursue.
“The Iranians are clearly stronger than expected and the Americans also have no real concrete strategy in negotiations,” Merz said during a visit to a school in Marsberg, a city in his home region of Saurland.
“The problem is always this in conflicts like this: You don’t just get in, you have to get out again. We saw this very painfully in Afghanistan for 20 years. We saw it in Iraq.”
“Right now, I don’t see which strategic exit the Americans will choose, especially since the Iranians are clearly negotiating very skillfully — or not negotiating very skillfully,” he said.
Meraz said that “the entire country is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by the so-called Revolutionary Guards.”
What effect is the Iran war having on Germany?
Merz said that the complex situation in the Middle East is now having a deep negative economic impact on Germany.
“It’s a very complicated situation right now,” Merz said. “And it’s costing us a lot of money. This conflict, this war against Iran, has a direct impact on our economic output.”
