Trump reviews Tehran’s new proposal with skepticism

Jailed Iranian rights lawyer Nargess Mohammadi’s health was at “very high risk”, her foundation and family said.

Iran said on Saturday that it is up to the Trump administration whether it wants to reach a negotiated settlement or return to open war.

“The ball is now in the United States’ court to choose the path of diplomacy or continue a confrontational approach,” Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told diplomats in Tehran, according to state broadcaster IRIB.

“Iran is ready for both paths in order to safeguard its national interests and security,” he said.

At the same time, Mohammad Jafar Asadi, a senior figure in the Central Command of the Iranian Army, said, “There is a possibility of a renewed conflict between Iran and the United States.”

“The evidence showed that the United States is not committed to any promises or agreements,” Iran’s Fars news agency quoted him as saying.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he was reviewing a new Iranian proposal to end the war.

“I’ll tell you about it later,” he told reporters, “They’re going to tell me the exact words now.”

Shortly afterward, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that he “cannot imagine this would be acceptable because they have not yet paid a sufficient price for what they have done for humanity and the world over the last 47 years.”

Trump’s statement comes after rejecting the previous Iranian proposal earlier this week.
