Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been hospitalized and is in “critical but stable” condition, his spokesman Ted Goodman said Sunday.
He did not give further details about the health condition of the 81-year-old man.
“Mayor Giuliani is a warrior who has faced every challenge in his life and continues to fight with the same strength,” Goodman said in a statement. “We want you to join us in prayer for America’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani.”
Giuliani was elected mayor of New York in 1993 after serving as one of the country’s highest-profile prosecutors.
He earned the nickname “America’s Mayor” for leading New York City after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
From ‘America’s Mayor’ to Trump’s ally
Giuliani became an advisor to Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.
He later served as Trump’s personal attorney for a time, and became a vocal proponent of Trump’s allegations of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
Giuliani’s unsuccessful efforts to overturn the election results led to criminal charges being filed against him in two US states and a defamation lawsuit filed by election workers.
Giuliani has denied wrongdoing in the criminal cases.
In 2023, a federal jury ordered him to pay $148 million (€126 million) to two election workers in a defamation case.
Last November, Trump issued him a blanket pardon.
Trump called Giuliani “the best mayor in the history of New York City” in a post on his Truth social platform on Sunday and said he has been treated “very badly” by Democrats.
Giuliani was also hospitalized after suffering a broken spine and other injuries in a car crash in New Hampshire last September.
