Spain to receive ship affected by Hantavirus in Canary Islands

Spain has announced it will receive passengers aboard the hantavirus-hit MV Hondias “in three or four days”.

The cruise ship has been stopped off the coast of Cape Verde for two days after Hantavirus was detected. Three passengers have died and several others are suspected of having the virus.

“The World Health Organization has declared that Cape Verde is unable to carry out this operation,” Spain’s health ministry said late Tuesday.

“The Canary Islands are the closest place with the necessary capabilities. Spain has a moral and legal obligation to assist these people, many of whom are Spanish citizens.”
