Gunshots were fired in Linz, Austria on Thursday. A police spokesman told Reuters news agency that three people had been killed and the weapon used had been recovered by law enforcement.
National public broadcaster ORF reported a large police presence in the Clausenbachstreet area in the north of the city.

“The dead found at the scene were a man and two women,” Upper Austria state police spokeswoman Ulrike Handelbauer told ORF. “Police cannot at this time provide more detailed comment on the motive or more specific circumstances of the identity of the deceased.”

Linz is located on the Danube River in the Upper Austria region in the north of the country, about halfway between Austria in the west and Vienna in the east. It is home to over 200,000 people.
Gun crime is relatively rare in Austria, with only 0.2 people per 100,000 killed by gunshot each year. For orientation, this is more than 25 times lower than in the US, but not even among the lowest levels in Europe.
