This man after shark attack on holiday island

A 38-year-old man has died in a shark attack off Rottnest Island, a popular holiday destination near Perth, Western Australia.

Australia has seen an increase in shark attacks recently, which scientists believe may be due to changes in the animals’ migration patterns amid increasingly crowded waters and warming oceans.

What do we know about shark attacks?

Authorities said the attack occurred around 10:00 a.m. Saturday (0200 GMT) in the waters off the island’s Horseshoe Reef.

The man was taken to shore and treated at the scene by paramedics from the St John Ambulance Service, but could not be saved, police said.

Surf Life Saving WA said a 5-metre (16-foot) long great white shark was spotted 80 meters off the coast at the time of the attack.

In January a shark attack in Sydney Harbor took the life of a 12-year-old boy.

That attack was one of four within two days, prompting authorities to close several beaches in the city as a precaution.

According to a database that records such incidents, there have been about 1,300 shark incidents around Australia since 1791, more than 260 of which were fatal.
