Active shooter reported at San Diego mosque

An active shooter opened fire at a mosque in San Diego in the United States, and police say several people may have been shot.

Police say the scene is still active but contained and it is not clear whether the shooter was inside or outside the building, or whether any suspects are in custody.

Aerial television footage showed children being escorted out of the mosque grounds as dozens of police vehicles surrounded the area.

The threat has been “neutralized,” the San Diego Police Department said in its latest social media update (as of 1400 PT/2100 GMT). But the situation is not clear yet.

The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom said he had been briefed. “We are grateful to the first responders on the scene who worked to protect the community and urge everyone to follow the guidance of local officials,” his office posted to X.

The Islamic Center’s website states that its mission is not only to serve the Muslim population, but also to “work with the larger community to serve, educate, and better our nation to the less fortunate.”

Five daily prayers are held there, and the mosque works with other organizations and people of all religions on social issues.

This is a developing story. Please refresh for updates.
