Where is Elversberg?
Elversberg is a small town northeast of Saarbrücken in the small state of Saarland in southwestern Germany.
As part of Spissen-Elversberg, the town has a population of about 13,000, but only 7,000 people live in Elversberg alone. There is no railway station and only three bakeries.
What is the back story of Elversberg?
The club was formed in 1907, although it folded during the First World War before reforming in 1918.
In 2013, the club reached the third division with RB Leipzig, but they were immediately relegated. After two playoff losses in 2016 and 2017, the club finally returned to the third division in 2022 and gradually began to gain more prestige.
The club’s surge began in 2017 with the appointment of Nils-Ole Book and former Bundesliga player, head coach Horst Steffen a year later.
Book first joined as a scout before becoming sporting director, where he played a key role in recruitment. Steffen secured back-to-back promotions for the club as they moved up from the second division to the third division in 2023 as a newly-promoted side.
Germany and Newcastle striker Nick Voltemed played a key role in the club’s promotion that year before moving on, and Bayern Munich’s Paul Wanner enjoyed a successful loan spell at the club a year later.
In their second season in the second division (2024–25), Elversberg were in the promotion playoffs. But Heidenheim’s 95th-minute winner left them heartbroken as they missed out on the top flight. Stefan Werder left for Bremen, star player Fisnik Aslani returned to Hoffenheim and five other key players departed. Not only did it seem that the chance was gone, but the club had a greater chance of fighting against relegation the following season.
How did Elversberg reach the Bundesliga?
With the help of consistency at the club’s leading levels, Elversberg found a way to turn a disappointing situation into a remarkable one. What proved particularly helpful was the leadership of the father-son duo of Supervisory Board Chairman Frank Holzer and Chairman Dominik and also working at main sponsor UrsaPharma.
The appointment of head coach Vincent Wagner from Hoffenheim’s reserve team was downplayed, but Wagner did not change much from Steffen’s approach. Aided by former Bundesliga legend Mike Frantz, assistant coach and team manager Selina Wagner, who won the Champions League with Wolfsburg, the unit off the field looked as cohesive as the one on it.
The club’s promotion ambitions were derailed by the departure of star striker Younes Ebnautalib to Frankfurt during the transfer window and the departure of sporting director Buch to Borussia Dortmund in March. After losing to relegation battler Fortuna Düsseldorf in the final game of the season, promotion hopes were once again in tatters. But victory on the final day was enough to retain their position in second place thanks to a better goal difference. Had reached the Bundesliga.
“A friend of mine said to me this week: ‘If Elversberg gets promoted, it’ll be like flying to the moon.’ Well, today we reached the moon,” Wagner said later.
Where do Elversberg play?
The Waldstadion an der Kaiserlinde, which has a capacity of 10,000 – more than the population of the city. Construction is reportedly not expected to be completed until 2027 to reach Bundesliga requirements—15,000 capacity—although Elversberg is already exempt from that rule.
Who are the main figures in Elversberg?
The strength of this team appears to be collectivity and continuity in leadership positions rather than one or two individuals.
On the field however, Bébès Conte was signed on loan from Hoffenheim and the attacking midfielder was an integral part of the club’s promotion campaign. Longtime goalkeeper Nicolas Kristoff enjoyed a strong campaign, with winger Lukas Petkov also contributing with 13 goals and seven assists. Striker David Mokwa was bought in January for only €1.5 million, but helped the team.
The average age of the team is 25.3, making it one of the younger teams in the second division. Having reportedly earned €10 million from transfers and only spent €3 million on new arrivals, it’s clear what the vision is for this team. But this summer, it will be interesting to see how the club approaches the transfer market as it looks to build a team capable of remaining in the Bundesliga.
