A man fishing off the coast of Western Australia was killed by a shark, police said Saturday.
According to police, the attack occurred on Michaelmas Island off the state’s southern coast, near the city of Albany, about 390 kilometers (240 miles) south of the state capital, Perth, while the man was spear fishing with his family.
He was taken to shore, where paramedics treated him. “Sadly, he could not be revived,” he said.
State officials said a 4.5 meter (14.8 ft) shark of an unknown species was spotted by a member of the public near Michaelmas Island on Saturday.
Three fatal shark attacks in three weeks
The attack comes just two weeks after a man was attacked by a shark at Kennedy Shoal in Australia’s northeastern state of Queensland.
A few days ago a 38-year-old man died on Rottnest Island near Perth.
According to statistics from conservation groups, about 20 shark attacks occur in Australia every year, but most of them are not fatal. Far more people are likely to drown by begging.
