Narendra Modi overtakes Nehru as the longest serving Prime Minister of India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India’s longest continuously elected leader.
Modi first took office in May 2014 and seeks a third consecutive term in office in 2024.
On June 10, Modi crossed the milestone of serving 4,399 consecutive days in office, surpassing the earlier record held by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Nehru, who was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 13, 1952, remained in office until May 27, 1964, serving for a total of 4,398 days.
Modi received warm greetings from world leaders on Wednesday.
In a post on Twitter on this occasion, Modi said, “Public service is the greatest measure of good governance. Only a person who works tirelessly with humility, dedication and a sense of duty wins the trust of the people.”
