UK police releases man arrested in crocodile-child case

A man arrested a day earlier on suspicion of attempted murder in the killing of an injured baby at a private zoo has been released on bail until September 18, police in East Cambridgeshire, England, said on Friday.

“A 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder,” police said on Thursday.

On Friday, Cambridgeshire Police said, “The man, who did not know the victim, was not considered suitable to be interviewed.”

What do we know about the crocodile incident?

The man was arrested at Johnson’s Crocodile enclosure in Old Hurst, a family-run farm and zoo that features a butcher shop and a steakhouse, and exhibits animals such as crocodiles as well as lions and tigers.

Right here, in the tropical enclosure, a three-year-old boy fell into the crocodile enclosure.

Media outlets in the UK reported that the boy was rescued by the business owner’s wife, who jumped over the fence to save him.

Police say the child is in a serious but stable condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with serious injuries.

Officials did not comment on what type of injuries the child sustained or how he received them.

The business’s Facebook page said the tropical enclosure would remain temporarily closed, adding, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family.”

Police are currently interrogating eyewitnesses.

Cambridgeshire Detective Inspector Verity McCann said on Friday: “At this stage we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this tragic incident to understand more about the circumstances.”
