US President Donald Trump on Monday Signed a pair of executive orders Promoting quantum computing and strengthening security infrastructure to reduce threats.
“We believe this could happen by 2028,” Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in a call previewing the steps and referring to quantum computers.
Quantum computing takes advantage of the principles of quantum physics to solve complex problems many times faster than today’s fastest computers.
Trump ordered to promote quantum computing
The first order calls for the development of quantum computers powerful enough to conduct scientific research and directs federal agencies to develop plans to deploy quantum-enabled technology.
The order also calls on the Pentagon to deploy quantum-enabled sensors by 2027.
The second order calls for strengthening security systems in the government and private sectors in the post-quantum world.
The directive aims to accelerate the processes of migration to post-quantum cryptography by 2031.
Part of this is meant to level up the systems to ensure they can withstand future quantum attacks.
The US and China are competing to shape the future of quantum computing
Quantum computing technology is still in the early stages of development, with both the US and China competing to gain dominance in this field.
“We’re going to invest in American quantum leadership like never before. We’re way ahead now. We’re going to keep it that way,” Trump said at a signing ceremony in the Oval Office.
Quantum computing brings with it significant cybersecurity risks because of its potential to overcome the standard encryption techniques we currently use to protect data.
Companies like Google, IBM and Microsoft and many other smaller companies are racing to build revolutionary supercomputers in America.
