A French teenager accused of allegedly licking a straw from a vending machine and placing it back in the dispenser is set to plead guilty to a crime in a Singapore court.
On Fridays, Singapore’s largest English-language daily The Straits Times It was reported that he was expected to plead guilty.
What do we know about the chaff-licking case?
Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilian, 19, was not present in District Court on Friday, when his lawyer said the teen would enter a plea on July 13.
On March 12, Maximilian, a business student in Singapore, reportedly filmed himself licking the straw from an iJooz orange juice vending machine before returning the dispenser and posting the video on social media.
The viral clip caused intense public outcry and Maximilian faced charges of public nuisance and mischief.
According to court documents, Maximilian posted the video on Instagram knowing that it “would or likely would cause distress to the public” and would “wrongfully harm or cause harm” to iJooz.
The company that operates the juice vending machines said it had to replace all 500 straws in the dispensers.
According to the charge sheet, if found guilty, Maximilian could face up to three months in jail for public nuisance and up to two years for mischief, apart from a fine.
He is currently released on bail.
