Ukraine’s capital Kiev was hit by a ballistic missile attack by Russia early Monday, according to city mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Local officials said at least nine people were killed and 46 others were injured in the attacks on the capital.
Klitschko said on his Telegram channel that people may be trapped under the debris of the building between the seventh and ninth floors of the building in Kiev’s historic Podil district.
Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s urban military administration, said a residential building in the Podilsky district partially collapsed.
He also said several multi-storey buildings were damaged in the Darnitsia district and people were believed to be trapped under the debris.
“These are residential buildings. Places where people slept and lived their normal lives,” Tkachenko said.
Earlier, Klitschko had asked people to take shelter due to the missile attack and the head of the city’s military administration had warned people about incoming ballistic missiles.
Meanwhile, Kiev regional governor Mykola Kalashnik said one person was killed and 10 others were injured in Bucha, a town near Kiev, due to Russian strikes.
Kiev is repeatedly targeted by Russia
At least 30 people were killed in a series of Russian attacks on Kiev last Thursday, with the city declaring a day of mourning after one of the heaviest attacks this year.
Russia has been repeatedly attacking Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles since its full-scale invasion of its neighbor in what is Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.
As US-led mediation efforts have so far failed to achieve any breakthrough, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zanelsky is expected to meet US President Donald Trump at the NATO summit in Turkey next week.
