At least 15 Indian tourists have died after a boat carrying a group of Indian tourists capsized near Vietnam’s southern island of Phu Quoc, according to local media.
According to Vietnam’s VnExpress website, the boat capsized about 400 meters off the coast of Rut Ngoi Island, carrying 36 people.
Several tourists and coast guard boats participated in the rescue operation, during which some people were rescued safely from the water.
Twenty-one people were rescued and all the dead were recovered, officials said.
What did the Indian Embassy say?
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam has released the names of all 32 Indians aboard the boat.
“In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists capsized near Phu Quoc island in Vietnam a few hours ago,” the Indian Embassy in Vietnam said in an earlier statement on Saturday.
It said it has set up control rooms at the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City and the Embassy in Hanoi to provide information and assistance.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the tourists were attending the annual meeting of a private mobile phone company. He wrote on social media that Indian Embassy personnel were at the spot.
Many of those on board were Lava Mobile employees and distributors from the state of Andhra Pradesh.
