The Ukrainian parliament accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko on Monday, after President Volodymyr Zelensky announced over the weekend that he planned to reshuffle his Cabinet and asked her to step down.
Sviridenko said in his farewell speech, “Every day this year demanded difficult decisions and decisive action. I am very grateful for the trust and support I have received. You also know that I have always believed that results matter most.”
Zelensky did not say who would replace Sviridenko, but Kyiv Independent, citing unnamed sources, reported it could be Serhiy Koretsky, CEO of Naftogaz, Ukraine’s largest national oil and gas company.
What did Zelensky announce?
Zelensky wrote on X that he had discussed the matter with Sviridenko and that he had concluded that “a cabinet reshuffle is necessary.”
He said Sviridenko was given the chance to lead “a new and important area of relations with a major partner”. Ukrainian media speculated that he might be appointed as Ukraine’s next Ambassador to the United States, but this has not been confirmed.
Sviridenko, who previously served as economy minister, was named prime minister in July 2025 at the age of 39 after playing a leading role in securing a minerals deal between Ukraine and the United States that was seen as an important way to link U.S. interests to Ukraine’s security.
Earlier on Tuesday, following his resignation, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Taras Kaka said the change in government should not affect the country’s EU integration plans.
“It is an unconditional priority for the Ukrainian government to move the negotiations forward, and at the same time to have a reform process,” Kachka said in Brussels, ahead of the formal opening of the second chapter of the accession negotiations with Ukraine covering external relations.
