The meeting, the first since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran, was likely to go in either direction before Netanyahu arrived for the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, with Trump complaining loudly about the Israeli leader publicly, notably on Fox News.

Tuesday’s talks, which lasted 90 minutes, were described by the White House as “positive and productive.”

In a social media video posted after the meeting, Netanyahu called it “one of the best conversations I have ever had with the President of the United States”, and said it touched upon “our common goal: ensuring that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons.”

Tuesday’s meeting took place ahead of elections in Israel. Reuters news agency, citing unnamed sources, said Netanyahu aims to get Trump’s support for his re-election campaign before the October 27 vote.
