Fewer Syrians return home to Germany than other countries – report
More than 1.6 million Syrian refugees have returned home after fleeing to host countries during the civil war, according to data from the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.
Statistics published by sunday world The total number of returnees from Türkiye was 634,000, with 621,000 from Lebanon and 284,000 from Jordan, the newspaper showed.
The report listed returnees from Germany under “other countries”, totaling about 6,100.
However, according to German government figures, about 3,700 Syrians have returned, out of more than 900,000 Syrians currently living in Germany.
The German government has revised its policy on Syrian refugees, saying they no longer require protection. Still, Berlin has not initiated forced repatriations amid a national debate about conditions in the war-ravaged country.
The newspaper cited a statement from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), which said: “The change in situation in the country of origin must be significant and not just temporary, but permanent.”
“This criterion can be determined only after a certain period of time and after the situation has stabilized,” BAMF said.
Opposition parties are calling for Syrian refugees to be allowed to temporarily return to their home country to assess the situation, but under existing laws, they risk losing protected status if they do.
Germany also provides financial assistance of up to about €1,000 ($1,170) to returning adults.
Syrian dictator Bashar Assad was ousted on December 8, 2024, after an overwhelming offensive by rebel forces led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
Rebels captured Damascus with little resistance, ending more than five decades of rule by the Assad family. Assad fled the country by plane and was granted asylum in Russia.
