Muslims in DR Congo’s Bunia mark Eid under Ebola restrictions

Muslims in the eastern Congolese city of Bunia marked Eid on May 27, under strict hygiene measures, with worshipers wearing masks, using hand sanitiser and praying in smaller gatherings as authorities sought to curb the spread of Ebola. The celebrations come as the Democratic Republic of Congo battles a worsening outbreak that the World Health Organization says includes more than 900 suspected cases, at least 101 confirmed infections and around 220 suspected deaths across Congo and neighboring Uganda. The outbreak, centered in Ituri province where Bunia is located, involves the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine.
