Deutsche Bahn advises against traveling amid heat

Germany to skip next round of squad rotation, Nagelsmann, Undav remain on bench

Nagelsmann will rotate the German team, Undav will remain on the bench.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann will rotate his team for the final World Cup group game against Ecuador, but striker Deniz Undav will remain on the bench despite his recent goals.

Undaw scored three times, including two in a 2–1 win over Ivory Coast, which gave Germany top spot in Group E and a place in the knockout stage.

Nagelsmann said, “I understand the logic that Deniz has earned his place in the starting line-up. Nevertheless, there is also a plan behind our decisions.”

He confirmed that changes were necessary due to injuries to Nathaniel Brown and Nico Schlotterbach, with Antonio Rüdiger and David Raum set to return to the starting team.

Nagelsmann also wants to continue alongside Manuel Neuer in goal, despite Oliver Baumann being tipped to make his World Cup debut.

“It’s all about rhythm,” he said. “Manu has played two games so far.”

Nagelsmann said he could understand Bauman’s case but stressed that decisions should be made with the “big picture” in mind.

Germany’s rail operator is offering refunds and asking people not to travel amid summer heat

Those who are reconsidering their planned and booked train travel amid the current temperatures are in luck thanks to a savvy Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s national rail operator.

“Anyone who does not wish to make their journey under these extreme weather conditions will get their money back,” the state-owned company said in a statement.

It also recommended that anyone who is able to postpone or cancel their travel should do so given the current weather conditions.

All tickets for long distance journeys purchased till 23 June are covered under the offer till 30 June.

This is the first time DB has offered refunds due to extreme heat.

The extreme heat is also creating problems for the railway system as a whole.

Air conditioning units on trains will no longer operate in very hot conditions as they often did. Additionally, the points and protection technology may be damaged by strong sunlight.

The risk of fire along the tracks is also high, while the heavy rains that often follow hot periods in Germany can cause problems.

Last summer, the heat already caused problems at several points in June and July and led to cancellations and delays, a situation that could easily recur this year.

Separately, railway services across Germany returned to normal on Wednesday morning following a nationwide failure of the operator’s digital communications system. Due to this problem, rail traffic was disrupted for about 2 hours and countless passengers remained stranded.
