A leftist activist group claimed responsibility for vandalism on a railway line in western Germany on Saturday.
What do we know so far?
In a letter posted on the German leftist website indymedia.org, the “Angry Birds Commando” group said it had placed incendiary devices on the railway line between Cologne and Düsseldorf.
Two fires broke out at two locations between the German city of Leverkusen and the city of Langenfeld on Friday morning, halting train operations and causing disruption. Firefighters extinguished the fire but damage remained on the track.
In an online letter claiming responsibility, the “Angry Birds Commando” group blamed industrial technology for environmental destruction: “This movement will stop the planet from being torn to pieces.”
It is unclear when normal operations will resume
Repair work on the rail line is expected to continue until Saturday afternoon. Acts of vandalism have caused cancellations and delays and it is unclear when normal operations will resume.
German news agency DPA quoted security sources as saying that the letter is genuine.
